Insomnia
Ugh. I have trouble falling asleep at night. Too much on the brain and I can't turn it off. This Kindergarten collage sums up my mood.

Herb Vogel
Herb Vogel, famed art collector, passed away this week at age 89. Herb and his wife Dorothy shared a passion for art and believed anyone could collect original artworks - and that, they certainly did. They spent decades in NYC amassing modern art and donated over 4,000 pieces from their collection to the National Gallery of Art in the 90s - mainly because their one-bedroom apartment couldn't handle any more. A documentary, called Herb & Dorothy, based on their collection and experience is on netflix instant que. If you appreciate art and the art community then I highly recommend you see it.

Children's books
I took a class this summer called "21st century Books for the Classroom." The class focused on various children's books and how to apply certain genres (non-fiction, fiction, easy readers, picture books, etc.) during instruction. I was blown away with how many children's books exist and how creative the author's and illustrator's have become. I came away with a huge wish-list of books for my art room - and for my personal library (Young Adult fiction is my new favorite). The good news is I scoped out the neighboring thrift stores and found a few on my list for .69! yay!
I thought I'd share with you a few authors that stood out to me and could be of interest to other art teachers/ classroom teachers/ and parents. Today I'll introduce Laura Vaccaro Seeger. Her website shows her illustration process and includes links to her book trailers on youtube. Did you know there are book trailers now? This was new to me.
Her book Green is an homage to the color and introduces young readers to various shades and hues. It's a simple book of text, but has beautiful complex illustrations with cut-outs and connections to each succeeding page. She's one to keep on the radar. If you see a book by her at your local thrift store, snatch it up.
I'll post other authors throughout the school year but if you'd like to see more now, check out my pinterest page. I dedicated a whole board to "books for the art room."
