And we're off...

Isn't this a cool picture?  I took this during a 4th grade art lesson on collections.  This boy collected planes from all the different airports he's been to.  I love the tiny path in the middle.

Kyle and I start our Southeast Asian adventure today!  Singapore is the first stop where we'll explore the temporary home of my bff Lauren.  Then the three of us embark to Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.  We can't wait.  I hope you have a fabulous couple weeks and I'll see you when we get back,

Smithsonian Workshop...

Was a success!!  I had such a blast presenting a 'challenge' to the Smithsonian guests for Draw and Discover at Dusk.  What impressed me most about the evening was the kindness of each participant and their willingness to try the suggested lesson.  The session at the end in which we shared our work was the highlight of the evening for me!  I wish I had taken pictures - but hopefully Mary at the Luce Center will post some on the facebook page soon.  In the meantime, here's a sneak peak of this evening's challenge....

New art education resource

Dwight Garner, from the New York Times, recently published a review of Draw it with your eyes closed: The art of the art assignment.  Compiled by the editors of Paper Monument, Draw it with your eyes closed offers the best art assignments as witnessed by artists and teachers.  Ex: “Take an 18 x 24 inch piece of paper and make a drawing using nothing but your car”

After Garner published this review he invited readers to submit their own works based on the assignments from the book.  How fun!  Check out the artworks here.

This book is definitely on my wishlist.  I'm always on the look-out for insightful, open-ended lessons.  Do you have a favorite source for lesson ideas?  Feel free to share,

Weekend

We had family in town for the weekend and  took a trip to the Air and Space Museum in Northern VA, near Dulles airport.  This museum is the companion museum to the one on the National Mall and houses larger aviation artifacts like the fastest jet-powered plane, Blackbird, (black plane, pictured below), and the space shuttle "Enterprise" (pictured behind Blackbird).  Enterprise was gi-normous, by the way.  When was the last time you saw a space shuttle?

The museum is a must see if you're in town and appreciate this form of history.  I enjoyed our visit and especially liked my ride with Kyle in one of the museum's 5 simulators.  We went upside down in a mock airplane, several times, while I was behind the wheel.  Although fun during the ride, I felt dizzy and sick for a good hour afterward.  Ride at your own risk.

hope you had a great weekend too,
