Amusement Day

Going to Hershey Park today with friends and then having a slumber party in rural Pennsylvania. I will post pics of our adventure when I get back.

New painting idea

My best friend and I went to New Orleans about a month ago to explore a city that we both had never gone. It was AMAZING. We both loved the architecture of the French Quarter, the spookiness of the cemeteries, and the always present music. I snapped this photo on one of our many evening walks. This particular store sold hats but after a little cropping the ladies look as if they have some over purpose. I love the vanity, confidence, and lack of confidence that seems to be alive in the image.

I'm currently turning this image into a painting using a panel that Kyle made for me (thank you Kyle). I'm new to panel painting and just love it so far. I do notice that the paint takes longer to dry but that just forces me to take breaks between layers. The painting is in the early stages but once it's finished I'll be sure to post.

Enjoy the day!

Looking Back

untitled. mixed media on paper map. 2009

Sometimes in order to create new work I have to look back at what I have done in the past. I came across this piece while browsing through my iPhoto archives. I had worked on it toward the end of last summer and up until now have forgotten about it's existence. Hopefully it is still tucked away in the confines of our dark basement, which is fortunately and unfortunately an archive in itself. Anyways, it's strange how it didn't seem finished to me last summer but after keeping my distance I realize that it is actually complete. You may recognize the figure/little girl from previous works. She tends to pop up from time to time. Hope you like it.

Blue-eyed Mary

Blue-eyed Mary. oil on canvas. 5'x4'

The inspiration and subject for this piece was a doll owned by an elderly neighbor of mine. The doll is so striking if you were to see it in person....no higher than 3 inches, it is aged and dirty, ceramic and fragile...all of these aesthetic qualities form a tension that provoke questions or conversation about her. The painting may elicit your own personal memories from childhood, which often is a guiding interest and hopeful outcome when I create work.
I hope you like it,

Sheena
