Happy Royal Wedding Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I can not even describe how excited I am about this day - with the weekend also including my little brother's wedding I think I am over the moon with giddiness.

So here is to all things wedding and royal and arty.

I'm sorry, did you just ask if this portrait was made with ingredients for a pot roast?  Why yes!  It is!

Wizard of Oz cake

A few weeks ago I blogged about my Mom's famous Wizard of Oz cake.  She made the cake for my 3rd birthday and I still recall how awesome it was.

When I was home this past week, my Mom found the film negatives (the prints were no where to be found) and was able to get the pictures developed.

Please enjoy looking at the images.  The cake is just the best.  I can't believe my Mom made that for my 3 year old self.

working in the Amazon

I am a hoarder of books.  I have a lot.  And I don't want to give them up....but there comes a time when I HAVE to ask myself, "do i really still read my grad school text book?"  So this past week I put a few of my dear books up on amazon....not really expecting much.  Within 2 days I already sold 3.  (yay!) Since I'm out of town at the moment, poor Kyle has to do the bulk of the work but if I make a sweet mill doing this then I'm sure he won't complain too much.

So I highly recommend visiting your book shelf and sorting through those college textbooks...they earn the most money and it may be worth it to sell them.

Have a great day,

I am officially on my spring break and I couldn't be happier.  I'll be going to this place:

Just kidding.  I'm actually headed to Ohio on Wednesday to see my lovely parents, my doggy Chesterboy, and to celebrate with some of my closest friends.  I can't wait :).

I'm all set for the 8ish hour drive because I just discovered audiobooks on itunes.  Where have I been?  Anyways, they have audiobooks on special and this month it happens to be Water for Elephants.  Being on special also means it's only 6.95.  Pretty good deal.....and hopefully it makes the drive go by fast.

Ceramic Tiles

For the past month, I've had the pleasure of working with artist-in-residence, Parran Collery.  Parran came to my elementary school as part of a Maryland State Arts Council grant and PTA funded program (thank you PTA!).  She has quite the reputation as a ceramic artist on the eastern shore and certainly won over the hearts of my students as she taught them clay slab techniques.

Parran worked with my 5th, 4th, and 3rd graders to create clay tiles.  The 5th graders created tiles inspired by the Chesapeake Bay region while the 4th graders focused on ecosystems.  Since our third graders are currently raising two baby terrapins to be released into the Bay this May, their clay tiles focused on our school's terrapins, Lucky and Squirt.

Here are a few examples from this unit...

Aren't they awesome?  I'll post more images as I finish uploading them (all 315 of them....).  Also be on the look-out for images of our clay mural that we worked on while making the tiles.  That's how we roll at Crofton Woods.

Weekend in pics

My annual art show at our local high school was this Saturday.  All the surrounding elementary and middle schools that feed into this particular high school showcased their visual and performing art.  It was such a treat to view the senior artwork and get ideas for art projects from other elementary schools.  Many families came out to support the arts which makes me proud to be a part of this community.

Check out the art from my school below (first 3 pics)....Kindergarten peacock, 5th grade blue crab, 4th grade Chinese Opera mask, 2nd grade sunshine, etc......The "Cop" is a first grade answer to 'what i want to be when i grow up.'  I LOVE the stache.

and your little dog too

I just love this idea.  One of my favorite birthday cakes my mom made me when I was a kid was a "Wizard of Oz" themed cake.  When my mom decorates a cake she goes alllllll out and I'm telling you that cake was the bomb.  It had 3 dimensional characters AND a yellow brick road.   I'll try to hunt down a picture and post at another time........it's too good to not share.

Anyways, this is an easier way to do an Oz cake for us novice cake decorators.  It made me giddy.

manic monday

Monday= a blatant reminder of a THOUSAND things i need to do by Friday.
Friday= a blunt reminder of a THOUSAND things i need to accomplish by Monday.

talk about barf.
I want to know how people lead non-busy lives because I could take some lessons.

better busy than bored. right?  RIGHT?  (that's the sound of me pounding my head against the chalkboard)

weekend in pictures

It FINALLY was nice outside on Sunday, so Kyle & I, plus Oscar, went for a hike in the Patuxent Research Refuge.    We fortunately had the whole trail to ourselves (that never happens) so Oscar had an awesome time exploring without the distraction of other doggies, bikers, etc.

I feel fortunate to have so many options when it comes to 'outdoorsy' activities.  Maryland has the beach, the bay, mountains, and a bagillion parks to hike on a beautiful Sunday morning.  This particular park has thousands of acres devoted to wildlife research- but we have Pres. F.D.Roosevelt to thank for that.

Where is your favorite place to camp or hike?  I'm always looking for new excursions.
