Friday (fine) art

202 Billboard Structures by Jenny Odell

Jenny Odell searches Google's maps for various satellite collections - billboards (shown above), swimming pools, parking lots, basketball courts, etc.  She says, "Though geographically they represent a vast (and fragmented) amount of landscape, the collections carry with them the feelings of smallness, vulnerability and nostalgia that I find inherent in satellite imagery."

For Christmas I bought my brother and sister-in-law a print of Odell's collection of 125 Stadiums (image below) from 20 x 200.  One thing I like most about her work is how she arranges the geographic landmarks to create a very graphic - and balanced- pattern.  At first it reads as an abstract design, but upon closer inspection, the subject matter is recognizable.

I'm having one of those, "bah - why didn't I think of that" moments.  Oh well.  Good Job, Jenny Odell.  I like it.

Have an awesome weekend,

1st Grade: A special family member

My grandpa that passed away, by Angelo J.

My first graders drew a portrait of someone special in their family, then added a frame full of pattern to complete the composition.  I posted their drawings here at imadepurple.edublogs.org
p.s. how much do you love this one?

I need this

Ever wonder how much spaghetti to boil?  I do and I always make too much.  This fun little gadget found via laughingsquid would help me ration the spaghetti according to hunger.  I love the hungry as a horse option.

Moby and Architecture

Yes, the Moby, the techno/electronic musician/dj vegan/activist (or Richard Melville Hall to his friends), has created an L.A. based architecture blog.  He travels the city looking for hidden architectural gems -mainly private residences- and comments on their existence amongst the gritty smog hole that so often consumes the California metropolis.

His posts are short and include his b/w photography -but what I like most about the blog is that it reminds us to find beauty in places that are overlooked.  Good job Mob's.

Also, don't forget, you have one more day to participate in my give-away

Have a great Monday,

Friday (fine) art: Thomas Moran

The Chasm of the Colorado

1873-1874 Thomas Moran Born: Bolton, England 1837 Died: Santa Barbara, California 1926 oil on canvas mounted on aluminum 84 3/8 x 144 3/4 in. (214.3 x 367.6 cm.) Remarks: Frame: 111 1/4 x 171 in. Smithsonian American Art Museum Lent by the Department of the Interior Museum L.1968.84.2 Smithsonian American Art Museum
2nd Floor, North Lobby

I typically don't post images of realistic landscapes, but I just love this one by Thomas Moran.  You need to see it at the museum because it's actually quite large.  I suggest you plant your feet in front of the painting, look longer than our A/D/D selves allow, and study every detail in order to appreciate how talented he was.  The storm is my favorite part.  Did you know Moran was a big influence in getting Yellowstone preserved as a national park?

Have a great friday,
