5th grade Realistic Animal Portraits

My fifth graders are wrapping up their last year of elementary school and I sure will miss them.  One of their last projects of the year was to paint a portrait of an animal.  We used several layers of watercolors to get a realistic effect.  First, they chose one color for a background wash.  Then, they painted the shadows using a dark blue.  Finally, they used realistic colors to complete the painting.  I think they turned out great!

Have a great week,

Friday fine (art)

I'm really digging the art of Holly Farrell for her simple and delicate paintings of ordinary objects.  The objects she paints (chairs, books, dolls, furniture) are familiar enough for the viewer to apply their own narrative or memory to the painting.  I love that.

One of my goals for this year is to support more artists by purchasing prints or originals of their work.  If I had the moola I would totally buy this couch painting because it takes me back to my college days.  This couch looks EXACTLY like the one my best roommates and I had junior and senior year in college.  AHhhh, it makes me happy.
